U.S. ARMY BRANCH INSIGNIA

The War with Mexico Era

Dress Cap Badges

These are the badges worn on the tall, black, leather, dress shako caps for parade and evening dress.
In the field, the dark blue, flat-topped, floppy, wool campaign hat was worn.
While these badges were intended only for the shakos, you could find soldiers wearing them on their campaign hats.
Artillery and Infantry soldiers would wear only the lowest piece of their insignia and Dragoons often
reverted to the golden, six-pointed, embroidered star worn prior to this sunburst and eagle design.
