The Veterans who were there, at the beginning, can tell you. The U.S. Army in the Far East area was not ready for a major war. These were garrison troops living the "good life" of Occupation Duty in Japan. Most of the units were only partially filled out with equipment and personnel. They certainly weren't ready for winter campaigns on the Korean peninsula; winter at the leeward edge of the Siberian tundra; winter so cold that blood would freeze before it could clot. That was some of the roughest, coldest campaigning this side of Valley Forge.
