OFFICERS

Any officer who wasn't Artillery, Cavalry, or Infantry branch was considered a Staff Officer.
The uniform differed only in colored trim and hat badge.

* Brigadier Generals commanded brigades, Major Generals divisions and larger units.
Lieutenant General Winfield Scott retired in 1861.  That grade went unfilled until
Ulysses Grant was appointed, by Congress, in March 1864.
